CAST is an Italian based NGO with its headquarters in Italy. It was founded in 1980 in Laveno Mombello, Italy and has since spread to three continents: Africa, America and Asia.
We’ve worked in Africa since our foundation, digging wells and teaching how to repair them, harnessing energy from the sun, water and waste, and reviving traditional crops and techniques that better adapt to climate changes.
CAST Kenya was established in 2007 and has since undertaken four successful projects and is currently implementing its fifth project.
In 2007, CAST carried out a project dubbed ‘Mihogo I’ whose aim was to develop cassava value chain in Ganze Sub-County by supporting smallholders to be better prepared and able to cope with drought. Sixty small holder farmers were capacity built and two cassava processing units were established.
In 2010 CAST started to provide its support to 8 Beach Management Units in Kilifi South and Kilifi North Sub-Counties to promote sustainable and participatory management of marine natural resources.
In 2013, CAST got the opportunity to upgrade and upscale the activities in Ganze Sub-County on cassava value chain. The intervention covered 23 groups of 470 smallholders, which increased to more than 1,000 smallholders of 67 groups in 2015 in the whole of Kilifi County.
